It was a great effort from the Northern Ladies to have teams in the semi finals. The club was guaranteed an all northern final and that Northern would win.
The final was between Chris. Noeleen & Lynlea and Hine, Carol and Sue W. It was a very tight fought match but it was Chris, Noeleen and Lynlea who manged to win the final by one point. This is Chris and Lynlea's first centre title and Noeleen's 15th. A great effort all round.

News Update - 5 Nov 09

Apart from the indifferent weather the season seems to have started well with club champs underway, Skogs finally started (a 6 team clean sweep this week against Terrace End!) and the midweek aggregate also well under way.

Mates In Bowls
The highlight this week has been the very successful first night of Mates In Bowls. Many thanks to all the willing helpers who attended last night. The 26 teams were all very well looked after and the positive comments from them indicating great assistance and encouragement from our club members. I heard many of the visitors saying that they can’t wait for next Wednesday. We do expect another couple of teams next week so we do need your ongoing help with running the evening. If you couldn’t make it last night but would like to help out please be at the club by 5:30pm next Wednesday.

Friday Night
It is good to see a growing crowd enjoying our traditional Friday evening social night. Last week’s fish and chip meal which followed housie was popular and I am sure that Bill will be doing that again soon. This Friday will see the very popular Racing Night happen again. For the grand sum of $2 entry you stand to win BIG (just ask Joan) with phantom bets placed on a number of live races and the winner being the person who makes the most from the $5 each way phantom bets. The large screen will be set up and racing guides provided. The first race is at 5:30pm so be there in plenty of time to register and make your first pick. Bring your friends for the best value for money night you will have in a long time.

Centre Triples and Pairs
Good luck to those of you playing in these centre events this weekend.

Club Roll Up
For those of you not playing the centre events there will be a club roll up on both thisSaturday and Sunday afternoons at 1:00pm. Names on the blackboard in the men’s locker room please or phone in your name by 12:30pm each day.

See you all on the green again soon

Centre 2x4x2 Mixed Pairs
There was a good turnout of Northern teams for this centre event, many of whom qualified. The final was held between Barry Wynks and Coral, his mother-in-law and Phil Skogland & Hine. On the day it was the master  Phil and his great lead Hine who prevailed and won the title. Hine and Skog combined excellently all weekend and played superb bowls. This is the first centre title for Hine, well done!

Refrigeration Couriers Open 2x4x2
26 teams turned up for the tournament on Labour day in near perfect conditions. The greens ran exceptionally well and the sun was shining most of the day. The icecream squares ventured out of the freezer to boost the bowlers energy levels! Couldn't have been better! The competition was tough but bowls were played in the best of spirits.

Opening Day
48 members braved the day to officially open the 2009-2010 bowls season. With 2 greens well under water and the ducks swimming on number 1 green it was Michael, our greenkeeper, and Liz, his trusty helper, that gave us a dry green to play on. We played 2 games and had a lot of fun.

Herbert Plate Results
20 members enjoyed the beautiful weather today to compete for the Herbert Plate.
Pairs were played and after two completed rounds we had 2 skips (Ramon and Marlene) and 2 leads(Paul D and Ray N) who each had 2 wins.

In the 3rd round Paul and Ray were both well beaten so this left the the plate to be decided between Ramon and Marlene who had drawn to play each other.

Marlene won this match very comfortably so therefore was the overall winner of this years Herbert Plate.

Club Captain Newsletter #2

Hi Everyone

Well it’s not long now before the new bowling season gets under way on Saturday 19 September at 1.00pm. Have your names in by 12.30pm and then a decision will be made based on the entry numbers whether to play pairs or triples. As it’s opening day, whites are a must.

Pre Season Pairs: This Saturday 12th Sept another pre-season pairs tournament of any gender is planned to begin at 10.00am. Enter your pairs team on the list up in the men’s locker room by Friday. Cost is $10 per team and dress code is mufti. At time of writing there was only room for four more teams.

Last Saturday we saw a wonderful day for the first of the two pre-season tournaments. The final result was only decided in the last couple of ends of the fourth round. Doug and Bill ended up the eventual winners with Des and Jacinta, and Scruff and Lynlea very close behind.

Friday Nights: We’ve had some fun evenings recently with Noeleen and Lindsay, and Marty and Kay winning prizes on the Trivia Music evening; Noeleen and Lindsay, Pat and Nancy and Marty and Kay collecting prizes for “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” and the Top Punter competition was won by Joan Smith, heading off nearly thirty other participants. Well done Joan.
Last Friday we had a Housie evening and this will be repeated on Friday week – 18 September. This Friday for members there will be a focus on handmade jewellery and Le Reve perfume – all for sale.

Heard on the Green Last Saturday:
Scruff: “How much am I short?”
Skip: “You ought to bloody well know, you’re closer to it”.

Mates in Bowls:
Our Club begins the Mates in Bowls 6-week tournament on Wednesday 4th November. These evenings are to encourage teams of non-bowlers to share and enjoy the game of lawn bowls.
We will need the help of members on these evenings to support these teams in mastering the basics, to help with the barbeque and help with running this tournament. See Paul Darbyshire for further details.

Video Tape Library:
Don’t forget the video tape library in the clubrooms. There is free use and there are a wide range of movies and musical videos to entertain you.

Club Captain's Newsletter
Welcome to my first newsletter as your Club Captain. I hope to communicate regularly on what is happening at the Northern Club, especially on up coming events and social activities.

First of all I wish to express my sadness for the loss of Cozzie. He was certainly a loved life member who over the years gave his all for the Club. It was great to see so many club members at his ‘farewell’ in the club rooms.

The winter months have seen indoor bowls being played each Tuesday afternoon at 1.30pm. Under the guidance of Noel Hannah an increasing number of players have been turning out to enjoy these sessions.

Friday night socialising has also continued throughout the winter with a strong brave core of members (15-20) turning up most nights, although the last couple of Fridays have seen 30-40 attending and enjoying themselves. Really good considering the cold temperatures we’ve been having.

Housie is taking a break at the moment but will resume on the first Friday in September (4th), followed two weeks later on Fri 18 Sept. Then it is planned to hold Housie nights on every first and third Friday of each month.

Until then we are planning some fun nights for you. This Friday (14 August) at 5.30p.m. there will be a music trivia evening. Come along, join a team and win prizes by identifying music and artists from the 50’s and 60’s.

On the 21st August at 5.30pm we will be having a “Who wants to be a Millionaire?” evening. Again, come along and make up a winning team.

On the 28th August there will be a “Club Top Punter” competition. Who can make the most money with “paper bets”?

On all three of these social evenings the entry fee is only $2 per person. Come along for lots of fun and laughs – it’s got to be good for you!

With spring just around the corner it’s time to clean up the bowls and get the whites all geared up for another season. I understand (not confirmed) that we hope to start off the season about the middle of September.

In our Club Air NZ Rugby Sweepstake, Marty, Doug, Bevan and Des are among the front runners with Pat and Terry J a little slow out of the blocks. However there is still another 12 weeks to go before we can announce the winners.

Finally, would all members who receive this newsletter who communicate with non-email members please pass on the above information about our social evenings. It’s really important that we have clear links to all our Northern friends.

Enjoy the warmer weather and I’ll see you all down at your Clubrooms.

Kind regards,
Bill Anderson

AGM - Sunday June 28 at 10:00am
Following the reports from your Executive, voting will take place for positions on the executive committee. All positions are open and nomination forms are on the notice board in the clubhouse. It appears likely that there are current executive members who are going to stand down from their positions after many years of dedicated commitment to the club.

It is vital that we have club members willing to join the executive committee, and I ask you to please give serious consideration to joining the executive, as the future of the club depends very much on you, the members. Think about what you contribute to the club – do you actively help with any of the many jobs that need to be done to ensure that the club continues to function as successfully as it does? We have one of the most successful clubs in the country and we are very proud of this status. For this to continue the club needs your support and commitment. Please contact myself or any member of the executive if you wish to discuss the executive committee responsibilities and work load.

Cap Presentations
Recently Bowls NZ began a process of recognising all bowlers who have represented New Zealand by presenting them with a numbered Cap. These caps are in chronological order of representation. Following the AGM at 12:00 noon, a representative of Bowls NZ will make presentations of Caps to four current or past Northern Club members (or family representatives) who played for New Zealand. These members are Phil Skoglund, Lyn McLean, Vic Sellars and Joyce Osborne.

All club members are invited to attend this presentation and to lend support to the members and their families who will receive this honour. A light lunch will be served following the presentations.

Club Working Bee - Sunday
Thanks to everyone who turned up to give the club rooms and grounds a good spruce up. Some of you may have already noticed Toms efforts in the carpark fixing the potholes and putting in the new curbing. Thanks heaps to everyone for their effort.

With the National Intercentre and Interclub event being hosted at the club in less than 2 weeks there are always other things that could be done, if you didn't manage to get down and help out I'm sure there will be a chance to help. The club will also need help in the kitchen, setting up greens, markers etc from Thursday 2 April - Sunday 5 April so keep your eye on the board and help out where you can. we have 3 teams playing in the Interclub finals 2nd & 3rd with a few members in the Centre teams playing 4th & 5th. So while helping out at the club at these times you can also watch some great bowls and get behind the clubs teams.

We are a great club, lets show the rest of NZ how proud we are of Northern!

Mates in Bowls
We were hoping to run the Mates in Bowls programme towards the end of this season but time has caught up with us so it has been decided to kick off the next season with a six week programme beginning on the first Monday of November and going through to Mon December 7. MIB is a programme designed for non bowlers who enter teams of three and play in an organised tournament over the six evenings.
A lot of the advertising and pre planning is completed with the assistance of Bowls New Zealand. As a club we are committed to providing personnel to help on these evenings with such things as coaching and assisting the non bowlers, setting up the greens, mats, boards etc, running the barbecue and helping in the bar. We will be asking for your help at the beginning of next season.
A presentation by Dennis Toon from Bowls New Zealand is to be held at our club on Thursday March 12 at 5.30pm. This will explain the way in which MIB is organised, and how our club can ensure that it is run successfully. We would like as many of you as possible to attend, as the future of bowls will lie with the new people that we can encourage into the game. See you there

InterClub and Intercentre
Congratulations to all Northern members who represented us at the Zone finals at Gisborne this past weekend. Three of the four Interclub teams ( Womens 1st division and Men and Women’s second Division) were successful in winning their zone final and go forward to the NZ finals which are to be held at Northern and Palmerston North beginning on April 2.
The Manawatu Open Men and Women’s Intercenter teams and the Mens Development team were also successful and will go on to the NZ finals which begin on April 4 also here in Palmerston North.

Remember – Hospice is Northern’s premier fundraising event and we hope to have the same support and success that we have enjoyed in the past. See you there

Interclub - Zone Playoffs
All four teams travelled up to Gisborne on Friday and settled into the motels ready for action on Saturday. With very heavy rain forcast all day Saturday everyone packed their wet weather gear. It rained off and on most of the day but the heavier rain didn't arrive till later in the afternoon.
Division 1 Women won - After only winning 1 game in the first round the girls played hard to get the win.
Division 1 Men 3rd - Only one win in the first round it was going to be hard to pull back. There were a couple of very tight games which could have gone either way but it just wasn't their day.
Division 2 Women won - Going into the last round the team had to win both games and pick up some extra points to pull ahead of the other team. The pairs picked up a good win and increased the differential then the fours team won well and added and extra 9. In the end they won with +6 diff over Te Karaka.
Division 2 Men won - The men were convincing winners and did it in style, not needing to play the last round in the rain.
well done to all the teams, 3 out of 4 teams through to the final is pretty good.
Three teams will now go on to the National Interclub finals which will be played here in Palmerston North Thurs 2 & Friday 3 April.

Carpet Court 2x4x2 Day one
24 teams entered the tournament, not quite two full greens, each green was split into 3 sections of four teams.
With some rain towards the end of the first game most got wet but the spirits weren't dampened. The gusty wind played havoc with the bowls and made for some interesting heads and a few bus parks. But it was a good day and eventually the sun came out. Thanks to Paul and Carpet Court!
Section winners; Tom & Julie, Scruff & Lynlea, Betty & Bill A, Alan & Viv, Grant & Kevin McK, Max & Joy. well done to all section winners. The next day is the Sun 8th March.
