Match Convenor’s Report

Club Championships

Last Sunday our Ladies Senior Singles was finalised when Feona Sayles defeated Melva Wood 21-9 in the final. Earlier in the day Fiona beat Desiree Lambert 21-18 in the semi-final.

Sunday 23 December the ladies Fours will be finalised. At 9am Liz Rossiter will play Judy Boag with the winner playing Joan Smith at 1-30pm.

Section Play of the Senior Men and Ladies Pairs has been completed with six teams qualifying in the Ladies and seven in the Mens. Post Section play starts at 9am 12th of January and with no weather interruptions the winners will be found that day.

Reminder to the 10yr and under players that dates have changed for their singles and pairs events and the entry forms are on the notice board in the main lounge.

Club Events

December 22nd is club Xmas Special day and entries are good. The day starts at 9-30am with the final of the men’s senior singles to be followed by a Subway lunch and three short games of bowls in the afternoon. Dinner at 6:15pm will make the day and the menu includes Roast Pork and Chicken. Entries for lunch and bowls are required by 5pm Friday.

December 29th is our am/pm MetLife pairs the only tournament of its type in the centre where you can compete for half a day. So if you’re not doing anything grab a friend and enter. Entries can be mixed or single gender. Start time 9am and 1-30pm. $5 per head per event.

Saturday 5th of January is Marj Howell’s pairs for ladies. Start time 9-30am. Entry form will be on board this Saturday.

Reminder that Carpet Court entry fees are required by anniversary weekend.

Community Trust singles and fours entries close mid January so help Christine by getting your entries in early.

Ladies Levin visit which was postponed will now be on February 11th so Ladies check the notice board in your locker room for more details.

Unfortunately the Xmas lunch had to be cancelled because of lack of interest. What a pity as I understand it used to be a highlight of the ladies year. I hope it wasn’t because the men were invited! Add to that the venue was one of our new in-house sponsors so not a good start for Northern. I suspect that the poor response was due to the closeness to our Xmas Special so suggest we look for an alternative date as soon as possible.

The Late News is don’t forget that the Aggregate and Points days are season events and don’t finish at Xmas so make sure when they recommence you are here to catch up to the leaders. Prizes include trips to Whangamata and six month free rental of Wheely Bins.

Well not a lot of other news other to say thank you to Michael for the great greens we enjoy at Northern; and to all our members, the match committee appreciates your support and we wish you all a MERRY XMAS and A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.

It is with sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Des Millington. Des was a long time club member who enjoyed his midweek bowls and was here playing only last week. Our condolences to the Millington family.

As a follow up to my comments last week about giving a helping hand around the club when you notice something needs doing; thanks to those who have been assisting with putting out or away the boards, mats etc. Please remember to clean the boards before you return them to the shed.

A reminder that Marlene Brown is our club Welfare Officer. Please keep her informed about any issues or situations relating to our members that we should be aware of.

As selector of the Ladies I would like to congratulate all our players that competed. To qualify for two National play offs is a great effort and our win should be recognised as a club effort. How pleasing to see full greens last Sunday for the men and women’s singles. Thanks to all who marked and helped around the greens and clubhouse. It is much appreciated when members help to put out mats, boards etc and put them away at the end of the day. Have you ever helped do this, or ever wondered who gets everything ready for your game? It’s fellow club members. Please support your club by helping with these little things from time to time.

Hospice

Planning is underway for this very worthy tournament which will be held next March. Laurie Izod has kindly offered to organise and co-ordinate Hospice this season, and if you can provide any assistance, ideas, prizes, sponsorship etc please contact him.

Carpet Court

The sign up sheet for this popular event is on the notice board and filling quickly. Have you got your pairs team in yet?

Photo Copier

The committee have recently purchased a new (used) copier which is in excellent condition. I will advise you shortly of the cost per copy if you wish to use the copier for personal use.

Match Convenor’s report

Over 65’s

This season we have made a lot of changes with the objective to make the club an interesting place to visit and play at. When the club program and handbook were done we thought we had covered most contingencies but alas we were wrong and as a result we have had to make some alterations to the published program. An event that has been forgotten by me but thankfully not by some members is the over 65 any gender club championship pairs scheduled to start Dec 5th. Because of my lapse and no entry form on the notice board we have deferred the start of this event until next Wednesday Dec 12th. Two rounds of pairs will be played of 21 ends starting at 10-30am. The afternoon game result will count towards the aggregate. Entries will close on Monday 10th at 5pm.The third round of section play will start at 10-30am on Wednesday the 19th and the first round of post section will commence pm that day. Further post section will be played commencing 30th January.

Aggregate

Aggregate results are posted on the notice boards by Dave Smith and you should all be aware that the prize to the top man and women will be presented on the 22nd December at the end of play. The winners will be the man and women with the highest points as at 5pm on Wednesday 19th.

Points day event.

The last round for the Xmas prize will be one of the games played during our in house event on Saturday 22nd Dec. The prize will be presented at the completion of play with all other prizes.

Xmas Special Dec 22nd

After 4 rounds of singles this coming Sunday the ladies will be down to the final. The men may be completed or also down to the final. My idea for this day (Dec 22) is to play the final of the singles at 9-30am followed by a subway lunch at approx 11-45am, followed by 3 rounds of drawn pairs ,triples or fours depending on entries starting at 12-30pm.Play should be completed by 5-15pm followed by the hard luck stories and then dinner at approx 6-15pm.During the hard luck period prizes can be presented

WHAT COST FOR A GREAT DAY?
Members can participate in all or part and again my suggestion is LUNCH $3, BOWLS $2, DINNER $12. Lunch will be Subway, Dinner is Ham or Chicken with a small sweet. A form will be on the notice board by Friday and you are asked to tick the appropriate squares. Should you wish to bring a guest please enter their name separately and tick the squares concerned.

Sunday 23rd Dec the finals of the Ladies club fours will be held with the semi final starting at 9-30.

This Saturday is Finals day for Interclub.

Our club is hosting the finals of six of the eight grades played and our teams could be involved in at least four of them .What a day it could be for our club and I hope many of our members will be there to support our teams .So if you haven’t played or have been one of the also rans, then try to be there in support of our fellow members. At Takaro and Johnston Park on Saturday morning our two division two teams men and ladies will be trying to win their grades so pop along there in the morning. Ladies at Takaro, men at Johnston Park.

Reminder of up coming events
  • Sunday 9th Mens and ladies singles 9am.
  • Saturday 15th Senior Pairs men and ladies 9am.
  • Sunday 16th is a reserve day for club singles but if the good weather continues it won’t be required. Do we want to run an in house event that day as there is nothing on anywhere in the centre? Will put a sheet up to gauge interest.
  • Saturday 22nd Xmas Special refer above.
  • Sunday 23rd ladies fours.
  • Saturday 29th Met Life pairs 9am and 1-30pm.
  • Jan 5th Marj Howell pairs [ladies]
  • Jan 12th Post Section senior pairs men and ladies
  • Jan 18th Joan Costello Invitation triples.

Note from Mike Hearsey
It would be appreciated if members who took glasses and mugs out onto the green would return them to the appropriate place. Some mats and jacks are also being left out. Finally I know some of the changes we have made have upset some of you but they have been made with the best interest of the members in mind and I would appreciate hearing from you rather than getting the message second hand. That way we may be able to solve any problems or misunderstandings.

Issue # 7 2007

Another very busy week in the life of Northern. Warmest congratulations to Phil Skoglund for his latest accolade – as one of the three inaugural recipients of the Manawatu Legends of Sport award. This is another well deserved recognition for Phil and his lifetime dedication to bowls; both as a very successful player, and a tireless promoter and enthusiast of the game. Well done Skog, we are all proud of you.

It is very pleasing to see so many of you on and around the greens in recent weeks. The good weather probably has something to do with this, but I also detect a real enthusiasm amongst our members to play as much as they can and to get involved in club activities and competitions. A reminder of the channels you should use if you have a concern about any aspect of club management, club tournaments, playing conditions, entry fees etc. In the first instance you should approach Club Captain Grant, myself, or one of the committee convenors. We are trying to establish open and clear communication with our members, and it does not help if the right people are not spoken to when there is a query or concern. Please approach the appropriate personnel and I am sure they will do what they can to answer your questions or address your concerns openly and honestly. This will help to ensure that misunderstandings or concerns are addressed quickly and effectively. Please do what you can to help keep the membership properly and correctly informed and advised.

Thank you.

Match Committee Report

Interclub has started and results to date are mixed with some teams doing well and others not so well. But its early days and with full round robin formats a lot depends on the draw and with promotion relegation system in place every game and every point scored can affect the outcome. One thing that was good was the weather and I think most of the venues did a good job. Team changes if any will be on the boards by Tuesday evening so keep an eye out and note your venue and start time. If you are playing at Johnston Park then transport needs to be arranged so consult the manager appointed. Good Luck to all players and teams; lets all have a happy and successful day.

Club Championships.

The men’s senior fours have been completed with the winners being Craig Gush [s] Neil Gordon [3] Brian Wilson [2] and Phil Skoglund [1], who defeated Noel Hannah [s] John Hayes [3] Lindsay Elston [2] and Harold Bayley [1].

The ladies fours section play has been completed with three teams qualifying. They are Joan Smith, Judy Boag, and Liz Rossiter. Post Section play is set down for Sunday 23rd December with the semi final in the morning starting at 9-30 and the final approx 1-15pm.

Senior singles are set down for this Sunday and entries in both men and ladies has exceeded all expectations to the extent that we don’t have sufficient rinks to accommodate all at the same time. Another problem is the number of markers required. We intend to split the day playing one gender in the morning and the other in the afternoon. We have put a list on the board requesting assistance from non competitors to help mark either all day or two rounds in the morning. Based on the response to this we will make our decision. Our options are to play only two rounds per gender in the day or if markers are available we will play part of one genders draw right through. This decision will be made by the match committee on Thursday so keep an eye out on Friday and Saturday for the decision. You will recall that we deferred a number of club champion events till after Xmas. They were - Colt and Filly singles and pairs. 10yr and under men and ladies single and pairs.

Men’s Intermediate fours.Men’s 10 yr and under singles are now set down for Jan 19th with section play to start at 9am. Entries close Thursday Jan 17th at 5pm.

Men’s intermediate fours section play is now set down for Jan 26th with a 9am start. Entries close 24th Jan at 5pm. Please note that to have Northern represented at Champion of Champions we need to find our winner by competition. So we need a minimum of two entries per event.

Ladies 10yr and under singles section play is now set down for Jan 26 in place of the Judy Bailey pairs which will be played later in season.

Please note that Jan 19th and 26th in your handbook are set down as reserve days and the above allocations are assuming that we don’t have any weather interference before then. It is better to give you some indication this far ahead than to land it on you with very little notice.

We have a number of dates set down for in house activity which can be altered to ensure our championship program is completed. A benefit of this weekly newsletter is to keep you informed so please take the time to read it.

December 22nd is Xmas special day which includes a meal for ten dollars so keep the evening free and enjoy the clubs hospitality and your friends company. Further details of the day’s program will be in newsletters to follow. .A notice will go up on board in the lounge shortly.

Club Open Tournaments.

Coming up is the Metlife double banger with separate events am and pm. Entry form is on the board and the cost $5 per tourney or $10 for the day.Carpet Court Pairs I am amazed at how quickly the entries are coming in so don’t be disappointed as the first 32 received is all that can be taken. Three days play for $15 each and the chance to share part of $2000 of prizes; a total of 49 prizes in all, sixteen prizes every day. Pairs will be handicapped once the final field is known.
