Update 12th December 2011

THE NZ NATIONAL CLUB PAIRS

Congratulations to Phillip Skoglund and Cameron Nairne on winning the Centre Final of the NZ National Club Pairs at Palmerston North on Sunday. Well done and good luck for your next challenge.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLES

The triples were completed on Saturday. There were some very good bowls played by all teams in pretty good playing conditions.
Well done to both winning teams and good luck in the Champion of Champions later in the season.

The Winners of the Men’s Triples was Craig Gush’s Team of Craig, Doug Hayward and Derek McKee.

Winners of the Ladies Triples was Sue Meyer’s Team of Sharon Sims, Sue Meyer and Anne Corlett.
(A toucher in the ditch and another close drawn shot was a good start on the first end only having to be replayed due to the competition stipulating 2 bowls and 3 were being played.)
Unfortunately, due to yours truly forgetting to snap the winners at the time, Anne had left the building by the time I twigged to the lack of the winners picture. I have tried to make up for this omission in the picture below! My apologies to Anne.

Winners of the Ladies Triples was Sue Meyer’s Team of Sharon Sims, Sue Meyer and Anne Corlett.

The Ladies Club Champ singles commenced on Sunday. The  second round is scheduled for the 28th of January 2012.

Saturday 17th December - Kevin Cowan Xmas Tournament

Update 5th December 2011

TE RAKI CUP
The Te Raki Cup is once again home safely in the Trophy Cabinet after its brief visit to Takaro. Northern defeated Takaro 4 to 1 in the challenge last Thursday at Northern to win it back.
I understand that the two clubs are in negotiations to have an even bigger, better, brighter competition for the Cup later in the season. It is proposed that this challenge will be on the carpet at Takaro and will be over several rounds unlike the single round, twilight competition just completed.
It should be a great day and something to look forward to towards the end of the season.

The Te Raki Cup.

INTERCLUB

Update 28th November 2011

It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of our Centre President, Maggie May.
Maggie’s funeral is today at 1.30pm.
Rest in peace Maggie. You will be greatly missed by all of us.

INTERCLUB
The selector has made a few changes for this upcoming Saturday due to the unavailability of some players from the first day. Please check the board and signify your availability.

CHRISTMAS 2011
This is nearly upon us. There is a notice up on the board with the details of our Christmas  Tournament on the 17th of December which once again is being sponsored by Kevin Cowan. The format will be a drawn tournament followed by dinner at around 6pm. The club (Kevin) will provide the ham. You need to bring yourselves and your own salad or desert.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FOURS
The Club Champ fours kicked off on Sunday in pretty unusual weather conditions for most of us. Warm, Sunny and no wind. Fantastic!
The second day is next Sunday. If you have not been playing or have been eliminated then pop down and have a look at the competition on Sunday. There will be some good bowls to watch.

Sunday the 27th.

21 Nov 2011

Update 21st November 2011
On Sunday the 20th the Club Held a Drawn Mufti event.
2 bowl triples were played by 10 teams on Green 2 in what could be described as very “character building” conditions. The strong gusty wind certainly gave the bowls a mind of their own at times. Despite the playing conditions, all those involved enjoyed the day. Thanks to Derek for his organisation and to our “Anonymous” Sponsor of the event. There were good prizes at stake for the successful teams.
Winners were:-
1st  Phil Skoglund and his team of Ramon Thornton and Val Kempster.
2nd  Colin Lozell with Lynlea Rogers and Don Ryan.
3rd  Derek McKee with Anne Corlett and Joy Pearce.
Congratulations to you all.

Phil Skoglund and his team of Val Kempster and Ramon Thornton.

Upcoming events.

This coming Saturday Interclub commences. Check the board for the teams and venues. If you are not playing, why not come along and support your club teams? There will be some good contests to watch.

Both the Men and Ladies Club Champ fours start on Sunday. Murray advises that he is closing entries at 5pm on Thursday (24th) so get your team in now if you haven’t already.

8 Nov 2011

Viv and Noeleen - Winners of the Bowls NZ Ladies Club Pairs.

The Bowls NZ Men’s Club Pairs final is yet to be played but congratulations to Northern's Philip Skoglund and Cameron Nairne for making it into that final.
Good luck to you both.
Their opponents will be Clayton Simpson and Shane Rogers from the Terrace End Club.

From the Match Convenor.

When details can be confirmed regarding the men’s date it will be featured on this blog and also on club notice boards.

Last weekend the Club hosted the Bowls Manawatu, Julia Wallace, Open Mixed 2x4x2 Pairs.
This tournament was run over the 3 days of Labour weekend in generally good weather although, there were periods of misty drizzle which made the conditions a little trying at times. Despite this, there were some good bowls played which were enjoyed by those who popped in to support their teams and club mates.
The eventual winners were our own Sharon Sims and Mark Noble. Congratulations and well done to both of you.
The runner ups were Grant Simms and Fran Frith of Terrance End. Grant is a dual member of Terrance End and Northern. Well done.

An attentive group of spectators of the Mixed 2x4x2 Pairs from the comfort of the club rooms.

On Labour Weekend Monday we held our Open Pairs tournament sponsored by Mark Sampson (Professionals).
Limited to 24 teams due to the final of the Open Mixed 2x4x2 Pairs being played, this tournament was won by Neil Gordon and Lynlea Rogers.
Congratulations to you both.

Coming up is the Centre Triples this weekend followed by the Pairs on November the 5th and 6th.

On Monday November the 7th Northern Ladies are holding the GV & M Boness Contractors Ladies Gala Triples. A 9.30am start.
Get your teams in quickly Ladies.

Don’t forget to check the notice boards at the club for entry forms for upcoming events and Club Champs.

17 Oct 2011

On Saturday the Northern Club travelled to Paraparaumu Beach bowling club to again do battle in the Annual Bi Series.
After a wet trip down and following a very nice morning tea, there was a rain delay of about half an hour before the sun came out.
There were a few puddles to be swept off the greens before the games commenced.
The rain stayed away for the rest of the day and the sun was a constant companion.
A very nice lunch was enjoyed by the Northern Visitors before the afternoon’s two rounds.
After afternoon tea, the result of the competition was announced with the Northern club once again being the victors.
It was probably a good thing that Northern did win as we forgot to take the Trophy down to Paraparaumu with us.
Chrissie did point out( jokingly, I think) in her thank you speech, that the oversight could probably be justified on the basis that having won the trophy on the last 3 occasions, perhaps we thought we were entitled to retain it.
(The consensus on the bus was that “They who shall remain nameless” did not want to dust and polish it.)
This oversight was deliberated on and dealt to in the form of a fine imposed on the person/persons deemed responsible by the” Northern Bus Fines Committee”.
It was with regret that we were also advised that the sponsor for the last 10 years has advised the Paraparaumu Beach and Northern Clubs that they would no longer be sponsoring this event.
Both Clubs were unanimous in their thanks to the sponsor for the last 10 years of sponsorship.
Both Clubs were also unanimous that it would be a tremendous loss if the relationship and competition between Paraparaumu Beach and Northern was to cease and consequently resolved to hold discussions on ways to continue the series on into the future.
For those who are interested, the final scores were Northern 51 points Paraparaumu Beach 37.
I was asked if once again. Did the ladies carry the men, as they had on other occasions? An interesting question! I will let you decide. Ask around.
Ray, the bus driver for the last 10 years, was kind enough to “Stop the Bus” at Waikanae on the way home to enable those who were interested to watch the Caufield Cup.

A close measure at the Paraparaumu Beach Club. Does anyone want to guess from what year?

This weekend is Labour Weekend and the Centre is holding their mixed 2 x 4 x 2 tournament on the Northern greens. Disappointingly there are only 24 teams participating.
There should still be some good bowls to be seen so why not pop down over the tournament and support the players and the club.
Don’t forget that on Monday we have the

MARK SAMPSON (Professionals)

Any Gender Open Pairs

9.30am Start.
Conditions of play and entry sheet are on the Notice Board.

I hope to see you there! It would be nice to have a couple of full greens.

10 Oct 2011

The Northern Club Championships season kicked off last weekend with the Intermediate Men’s 4’s.

With 4 teams participating, two rounds were held on Saturday before the rain set in chasing the players off the green in the afternoon.

Competition continued on Sunday in fine sunny conditions. However, by all accounts the breeze from the ranges did produce some trying playing conditions.

The eventual winner was Keith Hughes team consisting of Keith as skip, Harry Mills lead, Gary Fryer two and Kevin Bryan as three.

Well done!

The winning team is pictured below along with the team mascot!

On Saturday the Ladies played for the Judy Bayley Ladies Trophy.
Sue ran this as a progressive tournament and was fortunate enough to complete play before the rain set in.
The winners were Val Kempster and Noeleen Elston. Well done girls.

3 Oct 2011

Fitzherbert Rowe Men’s Open Pairs

This event was held last Sunday the 25th September 11 in fine but windy conditions.

It was good to see a number of members from other clubs attend this tournament with a total of 28 teams  competing.

Four games were played over the day with teams changing greens after two rounds.

Overall winner was Neil Gordon and Keith Hughes with 4 wins.

Second place went to Barry Wynks and Eion MacIntosh.

Both these teams won  4 games and had the same number of ends and only 1 point separated them in points scored.

Third Ben Hamilton and Harold Bailey.

Fourth Graham Cooley and Derek McKee.

Afternoon consolation winner was Peter Dellarbarca and Kevin Bryan.

In House Drawn Triples  Saturday 24th Sept 11

We had 20 players  for this roll up but because of the numbers  3 games of pairs  were played and the overall winners were Harold Bailey and Ramon Thornton.

In House Drawn Triples Saturday 1st Oct 11

30 players attended this roll up in very warm conditions and due to the numbers triples were

played. (Swap around like last week)

Winners were Anne Corlett, Marian Anderson and Elaine McQuarters.

2nd Des Meyer, Julianne Mills and Harry Moutan.

Can I ask that all club members help with putting away boards and other equipment after play.

We have a few members that just disappear into the clubrooms straight after play.

Also if you have any bowls results email them to John Hayes on johnhayes11@gmail.com and he will add them to the blog. This does not have to be done by a committee member.

Has someone got the results of the men’s and women’s pairs in Paraparaumu that I have heard some of our club members did well  in.

Next weekend we have Club Champs Men’s Intermediate Fours and Ladies only tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.

Don’t forget to put your names on the sheets in the notice Board for the many upcoming events.

Good Bowling

Murray

2011 - 2012 Season Opening
The season got away to a good start on Saturday with the official welcome and opening speech from Grant Davis.
16 teams of triples then went out to do battle on green 3 in very nice sunny weather with just enough of a breeze to make the wide hand tricky for those having their first roll up for the season.
After the game, tea was provided for those who wished to stay on.
Thanks to all those who worked behind the scenes to make the day a resounding success.

Herbert Plate
This event was played on Sunday 18th September  and was well attended by 24 club bowlers in very sunny weather.  It looked like this event may have to be cancelled with only 10 entries on the board on the Saturday. Once again the greens were in magnificent condition thanks to the hard yards that Michael puts into them and also for the support he gets from both Liz and Terry Rossiter. We are really spoilt with the quality of the greens they provide.
Teams were drawn and played with the progressive cards which can be very confusing however we made it in the end. Three rounds of pairs were played and after 2 completed games only 3 members had won 2 games with these being Ramon, Marion and Joy. The latter two were drawn against each other in the last round.
The eventual   winner was Marion Anderson who was most delighted and has promised to take care of the plate till next season.
Many thanks to the members who assisted in putting out and putting away scrims and boards.
Two hard working Skips from Sundays Herbert Plate.
